چکیده
Results: One hundred fifty patients were included in the analysis. Five single-nucleotide polymorphisms within the major histocompatibility complex region were associated with the number of focal abnormalities in the spinal cord. The most significant was rs3135388 (surrogate marker for the HLA-DRB1*1501 allele). Carriers of HLA-DRB1*1501 had a median of 4 spinal cord lesions compared with 2 lesions for noncarriers (P .001). No significant association was noted between the singlenucleotide polymorphisms and T2-weighted lesion load in the brain.

HLA-DRB1*1501 and spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging lesions in multiple sclerosis.
BACKGROUND Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a heterogeneous neurologic disease with extensive variation with respect to the most affected central nervous system region (brain vs spinal cord). OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that this variation in lesion location (brain vs spinal cord) might be (partially) genetically determined. DESIGN Candidate gene study. SETTING Academic research. PATIENT...
متن کاملP9: Cervical Spinal Cord Extraction in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Measuring Cross-Sectional Area
Multiple sclerosis (MS) refers to the lesions that accumulate in the brain and spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive and versatile modality used to show changes in the tissues over time. There has been significant interest in evaluating the relationship between the brain atrophy and disease progression rather than the spinal cord atrophy. The cervical spinal cord h...
متن کاملCombination of Myelin Basic Protein Gene Polymorphisms with HLA-DRB1*1501 in Iranian Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS), as a multifactorial autoimmune disease with complex genetic basis, causes demyelination in the central nervous system via cytokine responses to myelin antigens. Myelin basic protein (MBP) is the main protein component of the myelin sheath. HLA-DRB (human leukocyte antigen-DR beta) alleles, particularly HLA-DRB1*1501, may be of significance in the pathogenesi...
متن کاملThe influence of combined genotypes of the HLADRB1*1501 and CD24 single nucleotide polymorphism on disease severity of Iranian multiple sclerosis patients.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. It is a clinically heterogeneous disorder especially in terms of disease severity. Current investigations suggest that genes and gene-gene interactions not only influence on susceptibility to MS but also affect the disease severity. In this study, we investigated the contribution of the HLADRB1*1501 ...
متن کاملCasting light on multiple sclerosis heterogeneity: the role of HLA-DRB1 on spinal cord pathology.
Clinical heterogeneity in multiple sclerosis is the rule. Evidence suggests that HLA-DRB1*15 may play a role in clinical outcome. Spinal cord pathology is common and contributes significantly to disability in the disease. The influence of HLA-DRB1*15 on multiple sclerosis spinal cord pathology is unknown. A post-mortem cohort of pathologically confirmed cases with multiple sclerosis (n = 108, 3...
